The Hours-of-Service battle is heating up. With the American Trucking
Associations leading the charge the trucking industry has come out in full force
to try and derail the FMCSA's proposed Hours-of-Service regulations.
Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater has extended the comment period on
the proposed regulations until December 15, 2000 but the industry is trying to
derail the implementation of the proposed regulations by legislative withholding
of funding which would stop FMCSA from moving forward with the proposed
regulations. The federal fiscal year begins October 1st, so time is short for
the industry to succeed in this strategy.
These proposed regulations have become a contentious issue pitting the
trucking industry, regulators, legislators and special interest groups against
one another. Unfortunately the true issue of safety has been lost in all of the
political wrangling.
SafeTrac Solutions has analyzed the regulations and is strongly opposed to
them from a safety standpoint. We feel that they would negatively impact
commercial vehicle safety and highway safety in general.
No matter what your position is in this issue, for or against, be sure to let
your representatives know how you feel.
