A permanent administrator for the Federal Motor
Carrier Safety Administration still has not been nominated by the Bush
administration. Department of Transportation Secretary, Norman Mineta has
apparently recommended a candidate to the Office of Personnel Management but
does not know whether that candidate will be nominated by President Bush or
confirmed by the Senate. In the interim Secretary Mineta
continues to support Julie Anna Cirillo,
as Acting Administrator. Ms Cirillo was Acting Administrator under the Clinton
administration having been appointed after the congressional attack on George
Reagle.
Since Ms Cirillo is a career government employee
and not a political appointee it was not necessary for her to step down when the
Bush administration took the reins. Ms Cirillo is widely respected for her
straight talk and impeccable work ethic. Regardless of who becomes FMCSA
Administrator, Ms Cirillo will no doubt play a significant role in the future of
FMCSA.
