Carriers will now be required to file a MC-150 Identification report
with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. In the past a carrier
was only required to file a MC-150 when it began business. This new
requirement is a very good move on the part of FMCSA and will aid in their
overall safety strategy. Right now there are approximately 525,000 registered
motor carriers in the United States. FMCSA however, is not sure how many of
these registered carriers are still in business. By requiring biennial
registration, FMCSA will be able to purge inactive carriers from their database,
allowing them to focus their enforcement efforts on active carriers. Additionally,
the SafeStat algorithm is based on a carriers size, number of trucks and
drivers. When this data is incorrect in SafeStat, the safety ranking of a carrier
is dramatically skewed. SafeTrac Solutions has always recommended to its
customers to file a new MC-150 each year if they have significant changes in
miles, numbers of trucks or numbers of drivers. This new regulation will make
this recommendation unnecessary and will allow FMCSA to do a better job of
targeting carriers in need of safety enforcement. The deadlines for filing the
MC-150 is based on the last two numbers of your DOT number. If your DOT number ends
in:
- 0 you must file a MC-150 by October 31st.
- 1 you must file a MC-150 by January 31st
- 2 you must file a MC-150 by February 28th.
- 3 you must file a MC-150 by March 31st
- 4 you must file a MC-150 by April 30th.
- 5 you must file a MC-150 by May 31st.
- 6 you must file a MC-150 by June 30th.
- 7 you must file a MC-150 by July 31st.
- 8 you must file a MC-150 by August 31st.
- 9 you must file a MC-150 by September 30th.
- If your "second to the last number" in your DOT number is an
even number then you must file in even years. 2002 will be the first year
you have to file.
- If your "second to the last number" in your DOT number is an odd
number then you must file in odd years. You will be required to file this
year, 2001, by the deadline.
MC-150 forms are available from your state office of FMCSA. They will be
happy to provide you with any information you might need regarding this
requirement. This is a very painless requirement and will help the entire
industry. Do your part!
