In
a historic move, the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration has requested
comments on a pilot proposal to allow commercial drivers under age 21 to drive
interstate. Since 1939 drivers of commercial motor vehicles in
interstate
operations were required to be at least 21 years of age. Because of the ongoing
nationwide commercial driver shortage the FMCSA is looking seriously at a pilot
program of drivers over 18 but under 21 years of age. This
will no doubt be a controversial issue with strong feelings and good arguments
on both sides of the issue. Our hope is that the issue will be well researched
and very carefully approached. If you would like to submit
your comments on this issue, send them to:
