The National Highway
Transportation Safety Administration's final report for 2001
showed a 200 fatality decline, involving heavy-trucks, from the 2000 level . The
fatality number in 2001 was 5,082. This drop is one of the largest in recent years and far beyond the 19 that was
initially reported by NHTSA.
This report highlights the dedication of many millions of
people who have made this success possible. The commercial drivers, trucking
companies, the CVSA, state and local authorities and the Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration have all played a part in this success.
The truly amazing thing about the findings of the report, is
that it shows absolute fatality numbers dropped by 4% from 2000 during a period
when exposure (miles traveled) increased. What an accomplishment!
