The criminal events of September
11th have left us all reeling with disbelieve. How could anyone justify such
barbaric actions? The government has taken quick action to assure the American
public that things are under control and that we should return to our everyday
lives and keep the country moving. In an event such as this the
government really has no choice but to spring into action and establish calm,
measured leadership. The consequences of these events and the governments
actions may not be beneficial, however. As we can readily see know, a
cornucopia of additional airline security regulations have been thrown out in
order to placate the general public. But, in review of these measures, how many
of these added security measures truly improves security? Or more importantly,
how many of these measures would have prevented the crimes of September 11th? There
is no doubt that some of the measures can be effective if properly executed.
But, you can be sure that many of them will become regulations for the sake of
more regulations. This is what bureaucracies are made of and what they do.......
Create regulations and enforce them. With the administration leadership
focused on the big picture of homeland security the bureaucrats may have free
rein to propose, adopt and implement regulations that may be well intended but
do little for safety. As safety professionals we all need to keep our focus on
loss prevention and not get caught up in the moment. Effective safety
regulations must be well thought out and implemented.... they cannot be
effectively created in days or weeks under duress. Let's not let the
heat of the moment drive regulations in the name of security that may ultimately
degrade safety................... we must all be a part of future regulations.
Stay alert and stay involved!!
