The
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has targeted mid January 2003 as
their goal for updating SafeStat scores on a monthly basis.
This will be a tremendous improvement from the biannual
update that is currently being used. In the past, SafeStat was only updated in
late March and September of each year. Because of this, information in your
MCMIS (Carrier Profile) record only matched SafeStat twice a year. Carriers
following their SafeStat scores could only get an accurate picture of their
company's performance immediately after the updates. The remainder of the year
the information was inaccurate and didn't reflect the carriers true performance.
Since MCMIS is only available to enforcement personnel, the
only way a carrier could stay current on its record is by ordering a Carrier
Profile, which may or may not be reflected in their SafeStat score. With monthly updating carriers will have a more timely and
accurate picture of their safety performance.
The FMCSA plans to continue their practice of using the March
& September updates as their source for choosing carriers for Compliance
Reviews, at least for now. This practice revolves around the federal fiscal year
rather than any magic associated with these particular months.
We'll keep you posted on the date when this becomes
operational. It's a fairly large undertaking, so expect some initial delays and
bugs in the system.
Congratulations FMCSA. This is an important cooperative move
that will help improve overall commercial vehicle safety.
